One of America's oldest and most respected Buddhist monasteries, rooted in Theravada tradition and open to all.
History
The Washington Buddhist Vihara (affectionately known as the Vihara) was founded in 1965 and incorporated as a society in 1966, under the patronage of the Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera. It holds the distinction of being the oldest Theravada Buddhist monastic community in the United States — a living symbol of Buddhism's deep roots in American spiritual life.
The Vihara's founding vision was to guide the modern generation through the wisdom of the Buddha's Dhamma, along the path to inner and world peace. That vision continues to guide everything we do today.
Located at 5017 16th Street NW in Washington, DC, the Vihara has served as a place of refuge, education, and community for practitioners of all backgrounds for over six decades.
Mission
The Vihara is both a religious and educational organization, dedicated to presenting Buddhist thought, practice, and culture to the wider community. Resident monks and lay teachers are available to discuss all aspects of Buddhism, teach meditation, and offer courses and workshops.
The Vihara welcomes practitioners of all backgrounds and levels of experience — whether you are new to Buddhism or have practiced for decades.

Notable Moments
The Vihara's reach extends far beyond its walls on 16th Street. In 2015, Venerable Maharagama Dhammasiri Nayaka Thera — the Vihara's beloved head monk — participated in an historic interfaith dialogue between Buddhists and Catholics at the Summer Castle of Pope Francis in Rome. This gathering reflected the Vihara's longstanding commitment to dialogue, peace, and understanding across traditions.
The monks of the Vihara are available upon request for blessing ceremonies, offering their presence and guidance for personal and community occasions. They also preside at major Buddhist celebrations throughout the year, including Kathina, Vesak, and other significant events in the Theravada calendar.
